Superfluous information

I’ve been meaning to set up a blog for ages. Last week I came across an article that made me make the final jump and set it up. In an article regarding the murders of prostitutes in Ipswich, a BBC journalist said the following:

“We have got reassurance patrols out tonight, not just for the girls but also for the residents. They will be on duty throughout the night,” said Sgt Osman, whose older brother Russell played alongside Terry Butcher at the heart of the town’s illustrious football team in the early 1980s.

For years, that has been Ipswich’s claim to fame – a country town which, under Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson, punched above its weight in world football.

Sadly the town is making headlines for very different reasons now.

Now it may be just me, but I fail to see the relevance of the fact that the guy’s brother used to play alongside Terry Butcher for Ipswich Town. If Sgt Osman was himself a former footballer, I could understand it; but given that it was just his brother, I think anything more than “the brother of the former footballer Russell Owman” is a bit excessive. The fact the journalist has to explain who Russell Owman is, is evidence enough that the following few lines are superfluous.
