Finding proper nouns

I need to find all the place names that are in a text I’m working on. Rather than read through the whole document again, I’ve have found a search for Microsoft Work that will find all words starting with a capital letter that are not at the start of a sentence. Wildcards must be activated. The search string is:

[!.?!] [A-Z]

Because the text was in Catalan (though this also applies to French), I then did a separate search for those preceded by l’ or d’:

[ld]’[A-Z]

Obviously I may miss a place name that appears as the first word of a sentence, but most place names appear more than once in the document, so I shouldn’t miss any.

Weekend autoresponders

I’d be interested to know whether any of my colleagues set autoresponders on weekends. Most weekends I have access to my e-mail, and I’ll normally just reply to any work-related messages. This weekend, however, I was away in Andorra on a skiing trip, and I made a conscious decision to completely switch off from work, with the exception of doing some marking of my students’ work on the coach trip.

On the Sunday, I was really tempted to put a euro in the Internet machines in the hotel, but I resisted, saying to myself “you’ll be home later”.

When I finally got home on Sunday night, I found two e-mails from a client I had been negotiating quite a large contract with (about 1800€). The first had been sent on Friday night, just after I had left, asking me for my phone number and stating that he had to wait for confirmation from someone else within his organisation. The second e-mail had been sent on Saturday afternoon, and confirmed the job.

I was quite tired, so I decided to wait until Monday morning before replying with my phone number. So on Monday morning I sent the e-mail. Several hours later (about 15 minutes before I wrote this), he called to say that he panicked because I hadn’t got back to him and that he has contacted another translator, who has accepted the job.

As you can imagine, I’m not in the best of moods at the moment. But the best thing I can do is to think about how I can prevent this happening again. I don’t think I should have been carrying a blackberry around with me on the ski slopes, just in case a client contacted me (at the time of my Saturday e-mail I was in the middle of a skiing lesson), so I’m thinking that next time I go away for a weekend I should maybe set an auto-responder, like I always do when I go away for longer periods of time.

I’d be interested to hear whether other translators do the same, or whether they’ve had similar experiences.

Talk about a pressure job

Fabio Capello has just managed his first England game, with a 2-1 win over Switzerland. Though he claims he speaks to his players in English, he still prefers to do all his press conferences in his native Italian.

As I was watching his post-match interview, I was thinking how much pressure the interpreter must have been under: the interview would have been seen by millions, some of whom will understand Italian and would have spotted any mistakes in the translation. Of course, providing the interpreter knows a bit about football, this wasn’t a difficult interview to be interpreting per se. In fact, I understand the vast majority of what Capello said myself, through similarity between Italian and the three and a half Romance languages I speak. But I certainly would have been rather nervous with so many people watching on TV. I think he did a pretty good job. Judge for yourselves.

A mi me gustaría estudiar galés

En el Reino Unido, no existen escuelas oficiales de idiomas, como en España. Pero si hubiesen existido cuando yo vivía en York, a mi me gustaría haber podido estudiar galés, más que todo por curiosidad intelectual, aunque seguramente también se habría apuntado gente que querría ir a vivir o estudiar en País de Gales.

Pero algunas personas se ríe de tales posibilidades. Es así que, cuando a Mariano Rajoy se le preguntaron como le parecía la idea de poder estudiar catalán, gallego y basco en las Escuelas Officiales de Idiomas en Andalucía, mucha gente que estaba con él, que supongo que son de su partido, se rieron de ello. Habían unas caras como para decir, “¿Qué es eso de querer enseñar lenguas minoritarias como estas?”

Rajoy se dio cuenta que esta reacción no era políticamente correcta — o más bien dicho, vergonzosa — y intentó callar a esta gente.

Después nos da su rollo de qué grande es la lengua española y que importante es el inglés (o sea, no tan solo el castellano es más importante que las otras lenguas de España pero también el inglés), pero cuando habló de “lo demás” (curioso este uso de “lo”, palabra muy útil en español para expresar un distanciamiento de algo), dice que le “parece muy bien”.

Esto es precisamente lo que dijo en el programa Tengo una Pregunta para Usted (avanza a 00:59). Ha defendido el inglés y el castellano (curiosamente una de las razones, ha dicho, es porque es lo que hablan los castellanos, o sea, lo que hablan los castellanos es más importante que lo que hablan los otros españoles). Incluso ha dicho “esto me parece capital”. Muy bien. Pero después dice que le parece “muy bien” que se hable catalán, mallorquín, valenciano, euskera y gallego. No siendo el español mi lengua materna, tal vez me equivoco, pero a mi me parece que cuando uno dice que algo le “parece muy bien”, es para decir que hay otra cosa más importante. Esto se confirma cuando dice “pero lo importante es el inglés, y lo importante son estos idiomas”.

Bien, dejando de banda su desconocimiento de que el catalán, mallorquín y valenciano son la misma lengua, con estos dos vídeos hay algunas cosas que quedan muy claro:

Que para Rajoy, el español y el inglés son más importantes que las otras lenguas españolas.

Que a Rajoy le parece una chorada que en Andalucía haya gente que quiere aprender el catalán.

Y por si acaso no lo hemos entendido, al final de este último vídeo nos dice que lo importante es el inglés, el español y el chino.

Ya vemos que tipo de bilingüismo quiere el PP. Que no me diga nadie que este partido no tiene nada contra el catalán.

Solved: how to import Termcat terminology

You can now download an importable version of the glossary from here.

Termcat have made some of their terminology available here. The problem is, it is all in XML format, which is not easy to import into terminology databases. I’ve finally found how to import it.

In this file you can see how I’ve done it for the snowboarding glossary. Look first at sheet 1. Columns A to G are part of the original Termcat xml files when you open them up in Excel. The other columns have been created by me to get the data in a useful format. You can copy the other databases into this template, though don’t forget to fill down with columns H onwards if the list is longer. The quickest way is to use file merging software to merge them all into a single file, then open that single file and copy it into the template.

To get Sheet2 as you see it now, you have to do the following:

  • Select columns P to AV from row 1 right down to the bottom
  • Press CTRL + C
  • Open up a new worksheet and select cell A1
  • Go to the Edit menu and select Paste Special
  • Select “Values” and press enter
  • Select the whole sheet by clicking in the square in the top-left, between the column heading A and row 1 (or by using the keyboard shortcut (CTRL + A in English; CTRL + E in Spanish))
  • Go to the Data menu, and click “sort” (ES: “ordenar”)
  • Click the “Yes” option at the bottom of the box, since our data has headings
  • In the “Order by” box, select “Keep” from the drop-down list, and select descending order
  • Click OK

You may now want to select all the “Yes” rows (which are all grouped together) and copy them into a new file, which you can then import into your database.

Understanding Catalonia

By accident, I came across an article about Catalonia written by a Scot. Most articles about Catalonia either have a political bias or are not based on fact. But the article I came across today I found to be extremely well balanced and well researched. You can read it here (link is no longer accessible).

The only things I would disagree with the author on are:

  • He shouldn’t really say that Catalans call the Spanish language castellano. Just say Castilian. Many Catalans actually call it castellà (the cognate of castellano in Catalan).
  • He says that “written Catalan is now so dominant in Catalonia”. A trip to any bookshop or newspaper stand would show that, while Catalan is very much alive, it is not dominant.
  • He claims that the word nationality “is deployed not just by political nationalists but by unionists who argue that a State with solid historical foundations can combine different but over-lapping patriotisms.” While this may be true in the UK, this is not true in Spain: the Catalan parliament recently approved a new Statute of Autonomy stating that “Catalonia is a nation”, but when the Statute passed through the Spanish parliament, the “unionists” had it removed. This is in stark contrast to the British Conservative and Unionist Party (the official name of the British Conservative Party), which has no issue with referring to the constituent countries of the United Kingdom as nations.

    • Nevertheless, overall this is a good analysis, and I recommend it to any British readers interested in understanding a little bit more about Catalonia.

    Blacburn y Birminham

    Sé que la ortografía del inglés es complicada. Sobretodo la toponimia. Pero, ¿cuesta tanto buscar un poco?

    Suelo mirar los partidos del Premiership inglés en La Segunda y en Teledeporte. Cuando dan un partido el sábado a las 4, normalmente se juegan otros partidos simultáneamente. Cuando se marca un gol en otro partido, aparece en la pantalla. Pero semana tras semana los nombres de los equipos y de los jugadores están mal escritos. Está semana, por ejemplo, hemos visto Blacburn y Birmingham. Y solo es un ejemplo. ¿Cuántas veces leemos Foreing Office en los periódicos, por ejemplo?

    Yo no domino el portugués, y a menudo tengo la duda de si se escribe Jose o José. Si lo tuviera que escribir en algo que estaría publicado, sobretodo si lo vería miles de personas, me aseguraría que esté bien escrito. ¿Por qué no se pueden mirar si se escribe Blacburn o Blackburn. Solo lo tienen que mirar una vez, y, una vez encontrado, utilizar esta ortografía cada semana.
